GIG. YourOtherLover. Dublin Castle. 11.01.11

It's a cold - as usual - Tuesday night in London. And I find myself on the way to Camden Town. And Kill Yr Idols hates Camden. On the way to the Dublin Castle the night gets a little bit colder, but I march on.

The reason for such a journey is no more than a couple of demos that landed at our HQ. The first time Kill Yr Idols heard Kerouac, the next door neighbour threatened to call the police if the stereo volume wasn't turned down after the millionth listen on repeat. Can't help listening to (very) loud guitars and a thunderous bass enveloping a tune so infectious, it makes you feel happy to have your ears bleeding.

The band in question is YourOtherLover, playing their debut gig tonight.

After being exposed to Kerouac on tape, we also got familiar with Wolves, which opens the proceedings tonight, with a Alfred Hitchcock sample giving way to an hypnotic loop, then surrendering itself to a wave of sound not dissimilar to A Place To Bury Strangers. Dan takes to the microphone cutting a Mark Lanegan-type stage presence, with his potent vocals through what seems to be a hell of an effects box, creating an eerie, at the same time menacing atmosphere.

The power, and heartbeat, comes from the rhythm section, courtesy of Si and Keiren. Seriously heavy stuff, and perfectly complemented by the psychedelic edge coming from guitarist Ben's amp. It haunts the listener wherever they go, it goes for your blood and wants more. As the band progresses through the set the crowd get into it more and more, with the aforementioned Kerouac getting an enormous acclaim.

It was a tremendous debut, with more to come. Their forthcoming gig list is ever growing:

04/02/11 - Bangers & Mash Club@The Barfly
19/02/11 - Sunkan Dymonds Club@ The Zenith Bar
05/03/11 - @The Wilmington Arms
25/03/11 - Club for Losers@St Moritz
07/04/11 - Upstairs@The Garage

And they are also doing a DJ set at Kill Yr Idols Club launch at The Victoria, Mile End, on 28/01/11. Not to be missed!

Catch them live before they get bigger, which, by the promise of their debut, is imminent.

MANIFESTO

Kill Yr Idols is a mission. Whereas most independent music ventures in London traditionally focus on one sub-sub-genre of music, we have an objective to do something different. Inspired by the American indie/hardcore scene of the 80’s (kids, run to a library and read Our band could be your life by Michael Azerrad), we aim to work collaboratively with artists who share a common goal, but are not bound in a straightjacket to replicating the same sound and style as each other. We seek out artists who share common artistic bonds and ethos, but at the same time show a variety of sounds, themes and style.

Our playlist goes mostly back and forth between electronica, psychedelic and psychotic sounds, pop and punk. We want to put on nights where you will hear HEALTH alongside Sonic Youth, Telepathe alongside Bikini Kill and Teeth alongside Trash Kit. As well as promoting inventive and exciting new music through club nights and the Kill Yr idols blog, future events will feature collaborations with amazing independent artists and film-makers.

The first Kill Yr Idols night will be on January 28th at The Victoria in Mile End. Headlining are Bath's duo The Hysterical Injury, who are taking a short break from the debut album's recording sessions to show their noise pop brilliance in Its full glory. Chaotic noise electronica newcomers SEVERIN support following their debut at The Garage’s Ladyfest Ten Festival back in November.

You can also expect the best in cutting edge music on the dancefloor and some surprises courtesy of Kill Yr Idols, She Runs With Wolves (feat. Verity Flecknell from Storm in a Teacup & Annette Barlow from The Girls Are) and YourOtherLover DJs.

GIG. Crystal Castles & HEALTH. Roundhouse 15.10.10

Noise. It's a common thread tonight, starting with LA 4-piece HEALTH, who take to the stage of an already packed Roundhouse to a wild reception. Even with the sound problems that plague all the acts tonight, the band rise above it with the climatic punch of "We Are Water", an amazing, speed fuelled "Glitter Pills" and set closer "USA Boys". They also had time to showcase two new songs, giving a glimpse of what the new record will sound like. Pop, showered with sculptured noise as the crowd go wild and a girl by my side is literally dancing (convulsing?) in her seat.

After a long pause the crowd goes mad as Ethan Kath and Christopher Chartrand appear, then madness turns to hysteria as Alice Glass (literally) crawls onstage. Set opener "Fainting Spells" sets the tone for the night: a bass way heavier than the recordings, punctuated by Ethan's synths and sequences and Alice's screams. She is magnetic and confrontational at the same time and crowdsurfs for half of the gig- going as far as walking on the crowd brandishing a whisky bottle. Unfortunately "Doe Deer" gets badly affected by the problems with the sound, as does "Untrust Us". Nevertheless, the remix of HEALTH's "Crimewave", "Alice Practice" and current single "Baptism" still shine and are real treats. The highlight, however, is "Celestica", when Alice's effects-laden voice turns from screams to melody, backed up by powerful beats, courtesy of Ethan. It's epic and ends with rapturous applause. Everyone is dancing. Noise is going Pop. And I like the sound of that.

You've been warned.

So this is a start. Never thought I would have a blog…

Anyway, I’m going to do reviews, articles, interviews, you name it, about stuff I like or find relevant. Things that I find weird and/or wonderful and things that I just want to shoot whoever’s done it in the face. No compromise in this space. Music is the main subject, but there’ll be comics, film, poetry and godknowswhat too. Coming soon.

Open your mind.

Turn off the lights.
