A present from The Hysterical Injury

It's Constant Craving, a version of KD Lang's 1992 song, recorded with only a mic in the middle of a room.

CONSTANT CRAVING by Hysterical Injury

In more news related to The Hysterical Injury, who headlined KYI first club night a few months ago, we received an important update. Annie and Lee are in the process of finishing the mix for their debut album, and judging by the recent gigs we saw this already promises to be one of the albums of the year!

Here are a couple of demos to wet our appetite:
Three by Hysterical Injury

This is a band that deserves to be heard and seen. Bring on the album! WE. CAN'T. WAIT.

LIVE! ZeroSet. Buffalo Bar. London. 27/04/2011

Goonite Club rocked the Buffalo Bar between 2003-2009 and decided to come back for a one-off (maybe?) event to mark the venue's 10th anniversary, with founder DJ Saron at its helm.

After The Early Years decided to call it a day David Malkinson formed ZeroSet, which features occasional appearances by some of the deceased band's members, as it was the case tonight. All the expectation was around this performance. And it didn't disappoint.

What we saw was a monster consisting of synth, vocals and guitar layers building up and up until exploding like a thousand suns. Half electronica, half drone rock, with a good measure of Krautrock added to the mix, powered by drum machines, live percussion loops and beautiful melodies.

It's mind blowing. Keep your eyes peeled for ZeroSet.

Kill Yr Idols Club on April 22nd. Thank you!

The second Kill Yr Idols Club night was a blast!

Thanks to everyone who came over. We had brilliant DJ Sets by YourOtherLover, Donald Earl, Chloe (OFF N ON) and Andrew (NoFiction Club), playing electro, pop, noise and punk, and made people dance and have a great time.

Everything culminated on a magnificient live performance by KYI favourites Hold Kiss Kill, who brought a wall of sound along and were very very impressive indeed, ahead of a July set at Shoreditch Festival and their second single release.

The third KYI night should happen at the end of June, more details to follow.

Until then, bring the noise!

Glorious hand drawn sheets of loveliness.

by Killer #2

We at Kill Yr Idols HQ do love a good zine. Lovingly created, hand made and self published, these mini mags spread the word of creative, independent, free thinking individuals without censorship. And that we like.

Lots of treats at the moment then as last week, we picked up of the latest copy of She-Bang zine.  Perfect in its pastel hued deliciousness, this edition features travel guides, zine and music reviews and a very inspiring interview with Quasi. A perfect mix of brain-engaging articles and adorable illustrations. www.shebang-mag.co.uk

This Saturday, we will be at the Editions of You festival at Oxford Castle which celebrates DIY culture in all its glory. SEVERIN are performing live and there will be lots of lovely zines and artwork to get your mitts on http://editionsofyou.com/editionsatO3fair

And next week, April 14th sees the launch of issue 3 of glossy zine-come-countercultural ladies mag Fat Quarter at the George Tavern. As well as the launch of the mag, there will be acoustic performances, DJs and free cake. We’ll be there, you should be too! www.fat-quarter.co.uk

DIRTBLONDE

This is not your average Rock 'n Roll band.

Fuelled by drum machine beats, Dirtblonde sounds like a crash between Suicide, Beat Happenning and The Stooges.

Visceral, menacing, bloody and poetic.

Hailing from Liverpool, but sounding nothing like Liverpool bands (their words) they have played all over the UK, in Brazil and America (including a successful appearance at SXSW), bringing chaos and menace wherever they've been and receiving praise from the likes of BP Fallon, John Kennedy (XFM) and Steve Lamacq.

Essential listening are their debut EP, White Noise, Rubber Heart,  and the limited edition cassete Brooklyn/White Horses. You can have a taste of them here.

The Hangmen by Dirtblonde

GIG! PJ Harvey. The Troxy. 28.02.11

The Real Queen of England.

Polly Jean Harvey is a rare breed of artist. One that manages to stay relevant after all these years - 20 since her mind blowing debut album Dry - making songs possessing that magic you can't put your finger on but in turn made so many of us fall in love with music.

Some point out that her work after 2001's Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea suffers a dip in form. Well, let's just say that certain artists/ bands would sell their poor collective souls to make albums like Uh Uh Her and White Chalk.

Tonight's gig at Limehouse's The Troxy had been a sell out for ages, with tickets being snapped up back in October. The band for the occasion comprises long time collaborators John Parish and Mick Harvey, plus Jean-Marc Butty on drums; this is the collective that recorded her latest, brilliant, offering Let England Shake.

Its title track starts the set and sets the tone for the night; subtle arrangements with not many guitars in sight. Polly plays an autoharp, sometimes swapping it for an electric guitar. My mind blurs while the new record unfolds. The sound is so full. Even more impressive as the band play with the concept of space. There's so much going on, and at the same time it sounds so stripped down. Then she plays The Sky Lit Up, slower, so heavy. The audience's heartbeats seem to follow suit. My mind blurs even more. England is the best of the new ones. There are no words to describe it.

Death never sounded so sweet.

Her voice is emotional for the entire performance. She doesn't address the crowd for a second. She doesn't need to. She's magnetic.

It doesn't stop there. The double of Bitter Branches, followed by Down By The Water is mesmerising, before she disappears offstage and comes back for the encore, as if to deliver the final kill. All hail Polly Jean Harvey, The Real Queen of England.

The full setlist is below.

Let England Shake
The Words That Maketh Murder
All & Everyone

GIG! Arrows of Love. The Wheelbarrow. 13.02.11

Kill Yr Idols couldn't care less about the Strokes new album. Don't even mention The Vaccines, Brother, all that overrated shite. The White Stripes end was overdue, should have happened years ago. We don't have time for revivals either.

But we have lots of time for bands like Arrows of Love. Although their heels are firmly dug into early 90's territory, this is not a(nother) case of someone trying to rehash old corpses. This is a wild, powerful band. Abrasive, as on recent released single Real Friends, or Prescriptions, and trippy as on The Knife, which takes most people who are seeing them for the first time by surprise, being almost bluesy in parts. Interesting interplay with boy/girl vocals permeates the whole performance, which grows in intensity as it goes.

Arrows of Love is a group that sounds like a car crash in Route 666. It's sweaty, messy, dangerous, sexy. Keep your eyes peeled for them.

GIG. YourOtherLover. Dublin Castle. 11.01.11

It's a cold - as usual - Tuesday night in London. And I find myself on the way to Camden Town. And Kill Yr Idols hates Camden. On the way to the Dublin Castle the night gets a little bit colder, but I march on.

The reason for such a journey is no more than a couple of demos that landed at our HQ. The first time Kill Yr Idols heard Kerouac, the next door neighbour threatened to call the police if the stereo volume wasn't turned down after the millionth listen on repeat. Can't help listening to (very) loud guitars and a thunderous bass enveloping a tune so infectious, it makes you feel happy to have your ears bleeding.

The band in question is YourOtherLover, playing their debut gig tonight.

After being exposed to Kerouac on tape, we also got familiar with Wolves, which opens the proceedings tonight, with a Alfred Hitchcock sample giving way to an hypnotic loop, then surrendering itself to a wave of sound not dissimilar to A Place To Bury Strangers. Dan takes to the microphone cutting a Mark Lanegan-type stage presence, with his potent vocals through what seems to be a hell of an effects box, creating an eerie, at the same time menacing atmosphere.

The power, and heartbeat, comes from the rhythm section, courtesy of Si and Keiren. Seriously heavy stuff, and perfectly complemented by the psychedelic edge coming from guitarist Ben's amp. It haunts the listener wherever they go, it goes for your blood and wants more. As the band progresses through the set the crowd get into it more and more, with the aforementioned Kerouac getting an enormous acclaim.

It was a tremendous debut, with more to come. Their forthcoming gig list is ever growing:

04/02/11 - Bangers & Mash Club@The Barfly
19/02/11 - Sunkan Dymonds Club@ The Zenith Bar
05/03/11 - @The Wilmington Arms
25/03/11 - Club for Losers@St Moritz
07/04/11 - Upstairs@The Garage

And they are also doing a DJ set at Kill Yr Idols Club launch at The Victoria, Mile End, on 28/01/11. Not to be missed!

Catch them live before they get bigger, which, by the promise of their debut, is imminent.
